How to determine the order of signing

If you have multiple signers, you can decide whether it’s important to follow a specific signing order or allow everyone to sign simultaneously. We explain how it works here.

Which options are there?

Once you add an extra signer to the signature requests you'll get the option to decide whether you would like to sign in order or sign simultaneously

Sign in order

1. What is Sequential Signing?

Sequential signing means that signers receive and sign the document one by one, in a predefined order.

  • Sequential signing: Each signer receives the document only after the previous signer has completed their signature.

  • Benefit: Ensures a controlled and structured approval flow.

2. Why Use Sequential Signing?

  • Controlled process: Guarantees that approvals happen in the correct order.

  • Compliance & accountability: Ideal when hierarchy or formal approval steps are required.

3. How It Works

  1. Create a sign request in Stiply as usual.

  2. Add all required signers.

  3. Select the option labeled "Sign in order".

  4. Arrange the signers in the correct sequence.

  5. Send the request

The first signer will receive it immediately. Each subsequent signer will be notified automatically once the previous signer has completed their signature.

4. Use Cases

  • Management or director approvals

  • Contracts requiring step-by-step authorization

  • Legal or compliance-sensitive documents

  • Agreements where hierarchy matters

Important

Sequential signing ensures that documents follow a strict approval path. It is ideal when the order of signing is important and when structure and control are essential in your workflow.

Parallel signing

1. What is Parallel Signing?

Parallel signing means all signers receive and sign the document simultaneously, rather than waiting for previous signers to complete the process.

  • Parallel signing: All signers sign independently, on the same document.
  • Benefit: Saves time when order is not required.

2. Why Use Parallel Signing?

  • Faster turnaround: No signer has to wait.
  • Efficiency: Ideal for team agreements, contracts needing multiple approvals, and urgent documents.

3. How It Works

  1. Create a sign request in Stiply as usual.
  2. Add all desired signers.
  3. Disable the button labeled "Sign in order" to enable parallel signing.
  4. Send the request—everyone will receive it at the same time.

4. Use Cases

  • Internal approvals (e.g. HR or finance team)
  • Partnership agreements with multiple signers
  • Documents with tight timelines where signer order doesn't matter

Important

It is ideal when the order of signing is not important and can greatly accelerate multi-signer workflows.

Setup your default preferance in your settings

If you have a preferred option for one of the above options, it is possible to make it a default setting. By setting this up you'll make sure that all the signature requests with multiple signers will be signed in the right order. Follow these steps to adjust your default setting.

  1. Go to your account settings
  2. Navigate to the tab "Sign request options"
  3. Choose your "Default order of signing"
